Ughelli South, Delta State — Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State has expressed the All Progressives Congress (APC)’s readiness to welcome former governor Chief James Ibori into its fold, emphasizing the need for unity among the Urhobo political elite.
Oborevwori, who recently joined the APC after defecting from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), made the statement during a vigil mass held on Wednesday in honour of the late former Deputy Governor of the state, Prof. Amos Utuama. The ceremony took place at St. Andrew’s Catholic Church in Otu-Jeremi, Ughelli South Local Government Area.
Describing Utuama as a selfless leader, Oborevwori recounted the former deputy governor’s legacy, including his donation of land in Asaba to the Catholic Church and his financial support for church development.
“To me, that is a kingdom investment,” the governor remarked, adding that Utuama’s passing should serve as a rallying point for peace and unity across Ughelli South and the wider Urhobo ethnic group.
During his sermon, the Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Warri, Most Rev. Anthony Ewherido, commended the late Utuama’s devotion to both faith and public service. He described the death of a believer as a transition to eternal life and urged mourners to embrace Christ and uphold the values of humility, godliness, and selflessness.
Ewherido also called for unity among political leaders for the continued development of Delta State.
Speaking on behalf of the bereaved family, Mr. Ovie Utuama thanked attendees for their support and asked for prayers during the family’s time of grief.
